The present study outlines major concerns and potential environmental consequences of the proposed Pancheshwar high dam in Uttarakhand (Central Himalaya), India. We evaluate the risks associated with the project in the light of environmental impact observed for the Tehri project in the region and the geological understanding developed over the years. Three major factors and their likely impacts analysed relate to (i) sediment mobilization from glacial–paraglacial zones and unstable slopes, (ii) infrastructure development, and (iii) seismicity. We highlight the need to reassess geo-environmental implications of the project in the ecologically sensitive Kaliganga valley.Keywords

Chronology plays an important role in determining the timing of geological and climatic events that shaped the earth’s surface processes, particularly during the Quaternary period, as this lays the foundation of understanding our recent past and predicting possible future scenarios. Considering that the major focus in Quaternary research is on the earth’s surface processes, climate change and human– cultural interactions, it is thus pertinent to secure the chronology of these events identified using various proxies. Hence improving the numerical ages and techniques for Quaternary sediments and artifacts is crucial for Quaternary research. In the Indian context, over the last few decades, the luminescence dating technique has made a significant contribution towards providing secure chronology on dunes, fluvial deposits, glacial/paraglacial sediments, coastal deposits and to some extent on archaeological materials.Full Text

Mountain roads are important lifelines and the most critical means for connectivity in the Himalayan villages of India. However, the inherent geological, geomorphological, ecological and climate fragility of the terrain warrants critical scientific investigations for the roads to sustain the vagaries of nature. Further, the increased frequency of extreme events with the ongoing climate change increases the potential impact of disasters. This note highlights the major challenges and issues faced with the ongoing road-widening projects in the country. It cautions against the uniform standard of road widening and the need to increase sensitivity towards appreciating the terrain fragility.Full Text

This study analyses the causes and consequences of slope instability around the historical Himalayan town of Joshimath, Uttarakhand, India. The town is in the Higher Himalaya near the Main Central Thrust. The lithology constitutes fissile, shattered and sheared gneiss. Consequently, the slopes are prone to land subsidence and mass wasting. In the last few decades rise in population has led to a surge of infrastructure development, thus causing immense pressure on the finite resources and limited accommodation space on precariously balanced vulnerable slopes. Particularly, the unplanned infrastructure development, lack of adequate drainage and excavation of roads through unstable debris slopes are some of the reasons that seem to have accelerated the ongoing slope instability and land subsidence.Keywords
