Abstract

The Titanium-Titanium boride (Ti-TiB) composite was subjected to surface modification using laser surface treatment. A significant increase in surface hardness to 980 VHN, relative to 513 VHN for the untreated material occurred with a laser energy input of about 30 kJ/m, achieved with 20 and 30 mm/s traverse speed. This increase in hardness corresponds to increase in surface volume fraction of TiB whiskers to about 65 % at about 30 kJ/m and above.

Abstract

This paper attempts at a review of the recent developments on the improvement of surface corrosion in titanium alloys and composites by various surface treatment techniques. The surface treatment techniques include different types of laser surface coating, plasma enhanced vapour deposition, high intensity plasma beam coating, cathodic are deposition and reactive magnetron sputtering. Also the effect of laser surface treatment on Ti-TiB composite and its corrosion resistance properties were reviewed. The possibility of laser surface modification of Ti-TiB composite surface for enhancement of corrosion properties was also reviewed and discussed.

Abstract

The main idea of this work is to compare the dependability of the theoretical and experimental evaluation of the hot cracking susceptibility of super austenitic stainless steel weld metal. In this juncture, the hot cracking susceptibility of super austenitic stainless steel weld metal is explained through a theoretical procedure and an experimental procedure. In a theoretical evaluation, the hot cracking susceptibility of a given super austenitic stainless steel is explained in terms of Cr_eq/Ni_eq, level of impurities (S+P%), ferrite number FN and microstructure. Another way to measure the hot cracking susceptibility of super austenitic stainless steel is through experimental tests by means of Houldcroft hot cracking test. The results of the theoretical analysis agreed with results achieved from the Houldcroft test. Therefore, the outcome obtained by theoretical assessment and experimental assessment indicate that the experimental and theoretical evaluation are consistent with one another and are both dependable.
