Five insecticides including two neem-based insecticides namely Achook and Neemactin, two biopesticides namely Halt and Dipel (both are formulations of Bacillus thuringiensis) and endosulfan were evaluated for their relative toxicity to newly emerged adults of T. chilonis. Observations revealed that neem based pesticides and biopesticides are harmless while endosulfan is slightly toxic to egg parasitoid.Keywords

Studies conducted during 1993 on incidence of pomegranate fruit borer and its natural enemies in Jammu region of Jammu & Kashmir state revealed that only Deudorix epijarbas Moore is infesting pomegranate in this region. Mean fruit infestation was 25.33%, however, infestation was lower at Kud which is located at higher atitude in comparison to Chenani and Dhrumtal. Two species of parasitoids i.e. Anastatus sp. nr. kashmirensis Mathur and Telenomus cyrus Nixon were recorded parasitizing on an average 56.43% eggs. Inundative releases of Trichogramma chilonis Ishii did not result in its establishment.Keywords

Field surveys undertaken in Himachal Pradesh since 1991 revealed that tomato crop suffered upto 56.7 percent fruit damage by Helicoverpa armigera Hubner (Anonymous, 1991.) Mathur (1970) reported four parasites of H.armigera from the State. In the present studies which were carried out at Solan (Himachal Pradesh, Campoletis chlorideae Uchida an ichneumonid and it hyperparasite Brachymeria secundaria (Ruschka) a chalcid have been recorded.Keywords

Among the coccinellid predators, Chilocorns bijugus Mulsant was found to be the most effective against the San Jose scale, Quadraspidiotus perniciosus (Comstock), a serious pest of apple in India and elsewhere (Pruthi and Rao, 1951; Chanyuvadze, 1976; Thakur et al., 1989). So far, only very little attention has been given to study the seasonal activity of the predator on San Jose scale in the apple ecosystem. A study was therefore conducted to obtain quantitative data on C.bijugus in the different apple ecosystem of Himachal Pradesh for developing effective biocontrol strategies for San Jose scale.Keywords

San Jose Scale, Qudraspidiotus perniosus Comstock is a serious pest of temperate fruits and is world-wide in distribution. The pest has been recorded on more than 200 different species of plants (Atwal, 19?6). The castor hairy caterpillar, Euproctis scintillans Walter has been reported as a minor pest of apple damaging its leaves and young fruits in Kullu valley (Bhalla and Pawar. 1977). During our field survey for pomegranate pests from June to October, the larvae of this pest were found feeding on the buds and flowers of pomegranate fruits. The damage ranged between 5-10% at Channik-har. Upper-Dbalpur and Seobag. However, maximum intensity of damage was recorded at Seobag. Beside pomegranate, the caterpillars were also recorded feeding upon the leader leave" of rice, maize and apple.Keywords

The cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae L. is a serious pest of cabbage, but also attacks cauliflower. Turnip. Radish. Mustard etc. affecting their growth and reducing their market value considerably. The role of natural enemies in containing the aphid population is of considerable importance. Recently. Verma and Makhmoor (1987) have reported various species of syrphid preying upon B. brassicae in mid-hill region of Himachal Pradesh. In the present study, efforts were made to determine the natural enemy complex of B. brassicae other than syrphids in and around the Kullu valley (H.P.) during the years 1987-88 from April to June by conducting regular field surveys. Parasitoids and predators so obtained were identified through CIE, London.Keywords

The pomegranate butterfly, Deudorix epijarbas Moore has in recent years gained much economic importance in the mid-hill· regions of Himachal Pradesh (Kakar et al., 1987; Prasad et al., 1987 and Thakur et al., 1988b). Sometimes, the damage is so severe that the whole fruit is ruined and it becomes unsuitable for consumption. Since chemical control of this pest is neither feasible nor economical (Kakar and Sharma, 1988), the present study was undertaken to find out the natural enemies of D. epijarbas and their natural parasitism in the mid-hill areas of Solan and Sirmaur districts in Himachal Pradesh, where pomegranate is grown as a wild form.Keywords

The influence of temperature (22, 24, 28, 32 and 37 °C) and relative humidity (45, 65, 85 %) on the development, survival, fecundity and predatory potential of Pharoscymnus flexibilis Muls. was observed. The optimum temperature and humidity for the development of different stages of P. flexibilis and predatory potential were observed to be 28°C and 65% relative humidity respectively. The beetles hibernate at 22°C and could survive for more than 175 days, while at 37°C, they died within 5-10 days. P. flexibilis was observed to consume on an average 1362, 2537 and 2110 San Jose Scale crawlers at 24, 28 and 32 °C, respectively throughout its larval and adult life span.Keywords

The coccinellid, Chilocorus bijugus Mulsant is a potential predator of San Jose scale, Quadraspidiotus perniciosus (Comstock), a serious pest of apple crop in certain hilly tracts of India (Pruthi and Rao, 1951; Tuhan et al., 1979; Rawat et al., 1988 a,b). Available literature reveals that insufficient studies have been undertaken on the biology of such an effective predator all over the world. Kapur (1954) and Chanyuvadze (1976) have only given some brief information on the biology of this predator. Since, information on the biology of C. bijugus is very scanty, an attempt was made to study in detail and the results are presented in this communication.Keywords

Studies were carried out in the laboratory to determine the toxicity of three commonly used fungicides (carbendazim, captafol and captan) against apple scab in Himachal Pradesh to the adults of two important Hymenopterous parasitoids of San Jose scale, viz., Encarsia perniciosi and Aphytis sp. proclia group. Results revealed that carbendazim 0.025%, captafol 0.16% and captan 0.15% were not toxic to the adults of either E. perniciosi or Aphytis sp. proclia group. There were no significant differences in the mortality and longevity of adult parasitoids or both the species in treated and control batches.
