Power Factor Improvement in the Steel Plant with Advanced AC Drive System
Subscribe/Renew Journal
This paper presents the analysis of power factor with DC drive system and AC drive system in one of the major steel plant in India. Replacement of DC drive system with AC drive system have drastically improved power factor of the system. With advanced direct torque control (DTC), performances of AC drives are similar to DC drives in entire speed-torque region. By various comparisons of technical and fi nancial parameters, it is found economical to use AC drives in place of DC drives. AC drives ensure improvements on power factor, energy effi ciency, reliability and production with reduction in cost, maintenance and equipment down time.
After comparing the DC drive system and AC drive system in pickling plant, the power factor improvement observed with AC drive system. The simulation studies also predicted that there will be improvement in average power factor from 0.2~0.65 to 0.93~0.97. Results obtained after replacement of DC drives with AC drives are quite matching with the predicted results. In addition, AC drive system also helped in energy saving and reduction in line stoppage occurrences.
