Subscribe/Renew Journal
The book The Challenges of Indian Management authored by B R Virmani is a very well documented piece presenting styles and practices of managements’ in Indian Firms. The entire narrative is classified into five parts and eight chapters. The author in his first Chapter titled, “Indian Management: An Overview”, takes the readers around the evolution and growth of styles and practices of managements in Indian firms. While presenting the History and evolution of management practices the author expresses that the practices in Indian firms are borrowed from the west first, and later from the Japanese. Discussing the early management practices, the author narrates the interaction between different cultures and practices under various rulers, leading to regeneration of administration and practices and feels that the Indian management is a bundle of contradictions held together by invisible threads. Because of cultural difference, there is a gap among framed policies and practice by the Indian management.
