Abstract

The most innovative online journals are maturing rapidly and distinctive new Knowledge Portals are emerging day by day. Foremost among the features of the portals is the hypertext link, popularized by the World Wide Web and which will form the basis of a new, highly integrated scholarly literature. Journal integration in this instance seeks to recognize, extend and exploit relationships at the level of journal content–the papers–while maintaining some of the familiar contexts. Links are a powerful tool for journal integration, most immediately in the form of citation linking. The paper defines what knowledge portals are and describes a new system, a link service, which is being developed to support novel and flexible linking mechanisms on the Web. The main aims and objectives of the study and the definitions of citation linking of journal articles and the importance of the citation linking are also discussed in this article with reference to the e-journal Knowledge Portal of ACM. The methodology used in the JACM to link the citations is explained with figures.

Abstract

The World Wide Web as a Global Information System has flooded us with a tremendous amount of data and information. Our capabilities of generating and collecting data have been increasing rapidly every day, in this age of Information Technology. This explosive growth in stored data has generated an urgent need for new technologies and automated tools to assist us in transforming the data into useful information and knowledge. Data Mining, popularly known as Knowledge Discovery in databases is the automated or convenient extraction of patterns representing knowledge implicitly stored in large databases which solves the above problem. This article explains What is data mining? and Why is it important? Also it deals about the basic concepts of data mining, data cluster and data mining rules. How to choose a data mining system with some examples also have been discussed in this article.

Abstract

Measuring the growth of fields and subfields has been carried out using publication output in different fields. However, not all published literature contribute to the growth of a discipline and thus the publications with impact alone are being used in many recent studies. In measuring subfield growth, general impact is not considered as a suitable parameter. Scientometricians have resorted for subfield impact to study the subfields for observing growth, impact etc. In this study, both general impact of journals in a field (impact factor) and subfield impact (subfield corrected impact factor) are used to measure the growth, size and impact of subfields in life sciences.
