The study calculates Return On Investment (ROI) in GNDU Library by linking the library to income generation by all the faculty members using the library. A well structured questionnaire was designed to elicit the opinions of the faculty members. Personal interviews were conducted to fill in the gaps if any. Responses were gathered from 191 faculty members of the university. ROI Model suggested by Roger Strouse for corporate and government libraries and adapted by Judy Luther to the academic library was used for calculating return on investment in GNDU library. ROI was calculated on the basis of responses received from the faculty members. The following three factors served as part of the model. 69.6% of the faculty use references in grant proposals. 94.2% of the faculty obtained citations/references via the campus network or Library gateway. 93.2% of the faculty state that citations/references are important/essential in securing grant awards. The use of these factors in the model produced a return of Rs 1.01 in grant income to the university for every rupee invested in the library during 2009-2010.Keywords

The present study explores the status of information literacy skills of students of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, their information seeking strategies and ability in acquiring, organizing, evaluating and using the information effectively. A well structured questionnaire was designed to collect data for the present study. Personal interviews were conducted to fill in the gaps if any in the questionnaire. Collected data was analyzed with the help of SPSS. The major findings of the study are that a majority of the respondents possess knowledge of MS-office, social networking sites and e-mail. Among six types of internet searching tools, search engines and wiki are the most common, while blogs, online bibliographic databases and subject gateways/portals are less frequent. On the basis of the findings, some suggestions have been put forward to improve the information literacy skills of the students.Keywords

The paper examines academic attitude towards publishing in e-journals, to determine the contribution of scholars towards and publishing in e-journals. A questionnaire method was adopted to elicit the opinions of the faculty members. Personal interviews were conducted to fill in the gaps. Responses were gathered from 542 faculty members of five universities. The results of the study show that a majority of the teachers prefer to publish in printed refereed journals. Most of the teachers publish articles for „career advancement‟, „advancement of new ideas‟ and „dissemination of results‟ and. the choice of journals for publication with more weightage, such as the „reputation of the journal‟, The „speed in accepting and publishing‟, „convenience‟, „easy and faster to reach appropriate audience‟, „quick response to ideas‟, „wider dissemination of results/ideas‟ and „hyperlinks to references‟ are stated by majority of teachers as advantages of publishing in e-journals. The teachers are also concerned about the disadvantages of epublishing such as; „copyright concerns‟, „plagiarism‟, „not refereed‟, „require technical skill‟ and „transient‟. On the basis of the findings, some suggestions have been put forward to make e-journals more acceptable to the scholars.Keywords

The present study examines the impact of e-journals on university libraries in terms of resources, staffing, space, technical services and equipment. A well structured questionnaire was designed to elicit opinions of the librarians. The results of the survey provide useful information regarding impact of e-journals on subscription to e-journals, infrastructure, staff, space, technical services, photocopying, inter-library loan, library use and reference services. On the basis of the results, some suggestions have been put forward for developing e-journals and ensuring their proper maintenance and utilization.Keywords

The present study aims at analyzing the use of electronic databases in three universities of British Columbia. A well structured questionnaire was designed to collect the responses of the teachers and the students. The data was collected through a web based survey. One thousand teachers and students were requested to fill up the survey out of which 515 responses were received. The response rate was 51.5%. The study deals with the various aspects of the use of databases such as familiarity with databases, method of learning database use skills, frequency of database use, purposes for which the databases are used, success rate in finding the information, problems in finding the information, features of a good database and the most preferred databases. The results of the survey provide useful information about the use of databases. Some suggestions are put forth to make the databases more beneficial for studies and research purposes.Keywords

The article discusses the emerging digital realities – the transition of the libraries from the traditional to digital ones especially in Indian context and their impact on the librarians. Highlights the expanding role of the librarians particularly in the design and development of new information products and services and of tools to support information seeking and selection, the analysis and synthesis of information content on behalf of the users. Concludes that the librarians will continue to play an important role in the digital era if they promote themselves as information managers, information analysts and information access providers unbounded by library walls.Keywords

Today, most of the cultural and heritage materials are being converted into digitized forms to provide immediate accessibility anywhere in the world. But due to obsolescence of formats, hardware, software and carriers, digital information will be lost unless we act. Hence preservation of digital materials for the benefit of present and future generations is an urgent issue to address. The present article explores various strategies and methodologies for preserving digital heritage materials; discusses issues concerning digital preservation (DP); enjoins upon the national libraries to take the responsibility for DP with the co-operation of several stakeholders–the Government, publishers and IT industry; gives an overview of initiatives taken by the national libraries world wide for preserving digital heritage materials; and discusses Indian scenario. It also focuses on the pressing need for the national library, state libraries, museums and libraries to work together more closely to successfully organize digital archiving in the 21st century.Keywords

The pervasiveness of the emerging networking and communication technologies pushes the librarian into new roles and competencies. The quality of future professionals depends much on having an up-to-date curriculum. It needs to be so oriented that it is able to cope up with the rapidly changing needs. The present paper reviews the UGC Model Curriculum 2001. An attempt is made to compare the curriculum components with that offered in USA and Canada and identify the lacunae.
