Abstract

The CRRI has developed a system of exchange of publications as a mode for collection development. In addition to exchange of publications, the extension of certain services also contribute towards enriching the collection. CRRI acting as an input centre to international databases and as correspondent for international organisations is able to acquire valuable research publications. A cost benefit study of the CRRI's exchange of publications and services programme is attempted.

Abstract

A before and after study of the acquisition of periodicals through the Centralised Acquisition of Periodicals project of INSDOC is described. Earlier, the periodicals were observed by direct subscription to the publisher. Since the introduction of the CAP, the orders for periodicals are placed on INSDOC. The details of work-flow, advantages and disadvantages between the direct subscription procedure and CAP are evaluated. Some suggestions for improvement in the CAP are made.

Abstract

The National Technical Information Service of D .S. Department of Commerce is the central source for the public sale of government sponsored research, development and engineering reports and other agencies. It is also a central source for the federally generated machine processable data files and related software. The NTIS has appointed agents in India for processing orders emanating from within the country. The paper highlights the experiences in collection development through the experience in collection development through the NTIS service and raises the basic question whether we are paying the right price for the documents acquired Case studies are cited.

Abstract

In the pursuit of research a large amount of data is generated both in the laboratory and in the field. There is a need to store, retrieve and re-utilize the data in an effective and economnical way. Data is presented in a variety of forms in the literature. "These may be in the form of graph" tables" pie-charts, Mapes etc. It has been observed in actual operation of the data bank in the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), New Delhi that the indexing system should have the capability to indicate the form of presentation of data as this constitutes an approach term i.e. the retrieval term. To meet this need a tentative depth classification version of CC for form of presentation of data, to. be treated as an anteriorising common isolates. has been attempted. Some examples are also cited.

Abstract

Describes the mechanics of preparation of an IAC product taking "Background paper for construction of low cost roads in marshy and wet areas of the ESCAP region" as a case study at Central Road Research institute. New Delhi. Methods and techniques used for analysing the problem, identification of sources, selection, collection, sifting, recording and processing of information/data and difficulties faced are highlighted. Independent and shared activities of information specialists and subject experts are described. The evaluation of the IAC product and its impact is discussed. The study reveals that 60% of the efforts of the subject experts were saved by the part played by information specialists", Detailed information about the ESCAP region countries, problem analysis,  information tracking path activity records and feed back proforma and time study records along with diagramatical presentation of the entire activities are provided, through appendices as an aid for easy comprehension.
