A new Chemical Notation System-ALWIN-(for organic compounds) which has, as its basis, the Wiswesser Line Notation is described in this series of papers. In arriving at this notation and its computer implementation, concepts from the Theory or algorithms, Theory of graphs and networks, Theory of programming languages, and the Theory of formal languages have been used. Abstract

The construction of ALWIN for fused and spiro ring systems is described. A new method called tessellation method' is used for the topological description of these systems. In order to select a unique code from among the several possibilities, the nodes of the chemical graph are labelled following a precedence grammar and certain selection rules.
