This study identifies both satisfying and dissatisfying factors of Non-Government College Librarians in West Bengal. A self-designed Questionnaire containing work environment factors, basic need factors, physical nature of work is administered on the target group of 200 non-govt. college librarians out of a total of 275. Interview procedure is also used to collect data from the respondents, Statistical techniques like, frequency; percentage, mean and chi-square test have been applied to know the extent of satisfaction of the subject. Respondents express their dissatisfaction on some of the relevant issues. It suggests that the college authorities be sympathetic to remove the factors of dissatisfaction for better library services towards its users community.Keywords

Discusses briefly the need of form divisions in library classification. Mentions the nomenclature of form divisions in different schemes, for instance it is called Anteriorising Common Isolates (ACI) in Colon Classification. Describes the procedure of knowledge representation for ACI and their respective notations, symbols etc. States the technique of selecting their respective category names to follow the facet formula. Also includes the scope of defining the specific facet formula for ACI. Illustrates steps followed in analysing titles (i.e. in the form of natural language sentence) of documents for finding out noun phrases and picking up isolate numbers, symbols, basic subjects from the frame based knowledge base designed for this purpose. Includes the treatment of three types of ACI to prepare a suitable knowledge base in the automated environment. Facet formula for ACI of Colon Classification is also included to handle it successfully following postulates and principles.Keywords

Elaborately discusses the treatment of the time isolates of Colon Classification (CC), 7th edition in the automatic environment. From the very beginning CC has separately specified isolate numbers for time, which is one of the five fundamental categories. As the time isolates can appear with any one of the Main Classes enlisted in the schedule of basic subjects, the schedule for time isolates is mentioned as a common schedule. This research paper describes the importance of time (i.e. Meteorological time, Civil time, etc.) in classifying the thought content of any document. It also discusses the structure of the schedule of the Common Time Isolates including all divisions and subdivisions. Discusses the rules of expert systems developed using Prolog to handle the procedure of picking up numbers from other schedules and forming the special components to build compound time isolates. Describes the procedure of developing knowledge base in respect of time isolates. Some special techniques of defining lexical knowledge regarding time isolates are also discussed. Working procedure of different program segment of inference engine is illustrated. Includes the scope of forming compound time isolates according to CC7. Illustrates the specific techniques used for different groups to follow the instruction of the schedule.Keywords

Colon Classification designed by Dr S R Ranganathan has gained popularity due to its analytico synthetic nature. From the very beginning it has separately specified isolate numbers for Space or Geographical areas, which is one of the five fundamental categories. As the space isolates can occur in any one of the Main Classes enlisted in the schedule of basic subjects, the schedule for space isolates is mentioned as a common schedule. This research paper describes the importance of space / geographic area in classifying the thought content of any document. It also discusses the structure of the schedule of the Common Space Isolates including the political divisions and subdivisions of continents and subcontinents and the administrative divisions of the country. Indicates the possibilities of using mother country and favoured country. Mentions the procedure of developing the knowledge base for divisions and subdivisions of geographical areas. States the rules of expert systems developed using Prolog to handle the procedure of picking up numbers from other schedules and forming the special components to build compound space isolates. Applies the frame based knowledge representation technique to develop knowledge base for different groups of isolate ideas as derived in CC7 using characteristics like 'by geographical feature', 'by population cluster', 'by zone', 'by area surrounded by ocean', 'by orientation', 'by empire' etc. Illustrates the specific techniques used for different groups to follow the instruction of the schedule.Keywords

The study aims to verify if a regional library consortium is developed among the colleges of North Bengal whether it would be helpful for the staff and users of these college libraries or not. This is done on the basis of the opinion of the users and staff of the colleges. The methods adopted were stratified random sampling for the selection of the colleges (50%), convenience method for selection of users (10%), structured questionnaires for interview; data are analyzed using Microsoft excel, hypothesis is tested against the interpreted data with Pearson's χ2 test. The study is limited to general degree colleges and B.Ed. colleges of North Bengal. The study favours the formation of the proposed consortium.Keywords

Documents on Jute have proliferated considerably along with the growth of the Jute Industry. The aim of this study is to develop a comprehensive single-window knowledge dissemination tool on Jute. Survey of subject gateways and Jute websites has been conducted to ascertain the need for the same. Development of a subject gateway on Jute information (i.e. Jute-Gate) is an obvious choice as there is no subject gateway on Jute, although different subject gateways have been developed across the world for disseminating qualitative information to information seekers on other subjects. A prototype Jute-Gate has been designed based on the feedback from a field survey of Jute Mills and other stakeholders using a free open-source Content Management Software (CMS) (i.e. Drupal).Keywords

A detailed survey of 166 subject gateways across the world was conducted to check for existence of any subject gateway on Jute fibre. In addition to that, 54 websites on Jute were also examined for assessing the volume and quality of jute-related information. A comparative analysis of 15 jute-related databases, information systems and subject gateways was also conducted for assessing the uniqueness of prototype subject gateway on Jute (i.e. ‘Jute-Gate’) in disseminating qualitative Jute information to stakeholders. It was found that, out of 166 subject gateways that existed between 1996 and 2017, 102 were active and 64 were closed as on 31.03.2017. Average age of the active gateways was 14.52 years though 5 gateways were found to have existed for 21 years and 3 gateways lasted for only 1 year. It was concluded that number of gateways is dependent on the subject category but average age of subject gateways is independent of subject category. It was also found that no dedicated subject gateway for jute fibre is available and the proposed prototype ‘Jute-Gate’ is a pioneering effort.Keywords
