A Study to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Structured Teaching Programme on Knowledge Regarding Prevention of Juvenile Delinquency among Primary School Teachers in Selected Schools at Tumkur

Background: Juvenile delinquency is an important public health problem that contributes to the morbidity and mortality of adolescents as well as places a significant economic burden on society. It is not merely an offence but also embraces all deviations from normal youthful behavior. Juvenile delinquency is a massive and growing problem worldwide. 

Objectives: To assess the knowledge on regarding prevention of juvenile delinquency among Primary School teachers in selected schools. Then to evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching program me on knowledge regarding prevention of juvenile delinquency among primary school teachers. and to find the association between the level of knowledge with selected Socio-demographic variables.

Method: The research approach used for the study was one group pretest posttest design. The setting was Shri Siddaganga Elementary School, Sri Basaweshwar Primary School, and Vidya Primary School, Khythsandra Tumkur. With a sample of 10 school teachers, pilot study was conducted, sample for the major study included 50 school teachers on the basis of Simple random sampling technique. A structured questionnaire was used to evaluate the knowledge regarding prevention of Juvenile delinquency among school teachers. The reliability of the tool was established by split half technique and the reliability co-efficient were calculated to be 0.95.

Result: The findings revealed that knowledge scores of teachers were inadequate before the administration of STP on prevention of Juvenile delinquency. The STP helped them to update their knowledge on prevention of Juvenile delinquency. The mean post-test knowledge of sample significantly increased after administration of STP.

Interpretation and conclusion: The data was analyzed by applying Descriptive and Inferential statistics. The results of the study indicated that school teachers do not have adequate knowledge regarding prevention of Juvenile delinquency. This assessment project has helped the investigator to develop an STP to improve the knowledge on prevention of Juvenile delinquency. The results have also shown that various demographic variable have significant association with respect to the knowledge of school teachers regarding prevention of juvenile delinquency.
