A Study on Occurrence of Body Dysmorphic Disorder among Nursing Students from Selected Nursing College in Mangalore

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a somatoform disorder with a preoccupation with an imagined defect in appearance. The present study assessed the occurrence of BDD among the nursing students of selected nursing college in Mangalore, India. A descriptive research design was used. The rating scale modification of BDD-Y-BOCS was used to collect the data from the 500 samples. The average score above 2.0 was the criteria to assess the occurrence of BDD. More subjects were of the age group 20-22 years (49.2%) and more subjects were girls (91.6%). Majority of the subjects were Christians (78.8%) and majority of them were single (98.2%). Most of them belongs to nuclear family (87.6%) with majority (28%) have 3000-5000 rupees monthly income. Major number (45.8%) of the subjects were living in semi-urban area. According to the Rating scale modification of BDD-Y-BOCS, occurrence of BDD is 3.6%. Their major area of concern was hair (54.8%). There was significant association between BDD and total family income when there was no significant association between age, gender, marital status, religion, type of family, area of living, year of the course, and Body mass index.
