Perception of Adolescence on Healthy Lifestyle and Factors Contributing to Health and its Barrier:Grounded Theory Approach

Background of the study: This paper describes qualitative approach in the development of grounded theory regarding the perception of adolescence on healthy lifestyle and factors contributing to health and its barrier. Objectives: To identify the perception of adolescence on healthy lifestyle and factors contributing to health and its barriers. To develop grounded theory based on adolescence perception on healthy lifestyle and factors contributing to health and its barrier. Material and Methods: A qualitative, Grounded theory approach was carried out to identify perception of adolescence on healthy lifestyle and factors contributing to health and its barriers. After the administrative permission, the samples were recruited by using simple random sampling technique. In-depth interview was conducted from eight subjects in a natural setting. The interview was conducted with open ended semi-structured questionnaire. It served as a guide to probe the emerging concepts from the samples. The tape recorded used during the interview and it was used as a major resource while coding. Field notes and observational notes also contributed as a resource for emerging concepts. Results: Several important themes emerged: Dietary pattern, sleeping pattern, physical activity, environmental sanitation, personal hygiene. The factors contributing to health are healthy diet, regular exercise, sound sleep, good environment, maintain personal hygiene. The factors contributing to barrier of health are craving for junk food, peer pressure, cultural changes, stressful life situation, busy schedule. Conclusion: A perception towards a healthy lifestyle among adolescence is that good dietary pattern, regular physical activity, environmental sanitation and personal hygiene. However, various factors which adolescence perceives serve as a barrier.
