Knowledge of Diabetic Clients Regarding Self-Care Practices in Management of Type II Diabetes Mellitus at Selected Rural Community of Bangalore, Karnataka

Objectives: The objectives of the study are to assess knowledge of diabetic clients regarding self-care practices in management of Type II Diabetes mellitus and to determine the association between knowledge of diabetic clients with selected demographic characteristics. Methodology: A quantitative research approach involving descriptive survey design was adopted for this study. The study was conducted in selected rural community of Bangalore in the state of Karnataka. To achieve the objectives of the study, a non-probability -purposive sampling was used to select a sample of 70 diabetic clients who had type II diabetes mellitus who fulfil the inclusion criteria. The data was collected by using structured knowledge questionnaire using interviewing technique. Instrument validity was determined through content validity, by a panel of experts. Reliability of the instrument was determined through the use of test-retest method which was found to be 0.78. Analysis of the data was performed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The results of the study indicated that 33 (47.14%) of the diabetic clients had inadequate knowledge followed by 25 (35.72%) with average knowledge level, only 10 (14.28%) among the clients had adequate knowledge and only 2 (02.85%) had excellent knowledge regarding diabetes mellitus and its management through self-care and it was observed that there was no significant association between knowledge of diabetic clients and their sample characteristics. Conclusion: The researcher concludes that most of the diabetic clients have inadequate knowledge regarding self-care practices on management of diabetes mellitus. Recommendation: There is a need for health education on all aspect on diabetes like risk factors, complications, self-care and treatment for diabetic clients by medial Practioners at hospital as well as at community level.
