Aim: To assess the antiulcer effect of aqueous leaf extract of Commicarpus chinensis in ethanol and aspirin induced ulcerations.

Material and Method: Wistar albino rats of either sex weighing between 180-220g were used for the study. The plants were collected from Gulbarga University campus, Gulbarga, Karnataka and shade dried, subjected to soxhlet extraction using water as solvent to obtain aqueous extract. The extract was evaluated for its antiulcer activity by using ethanol, aspirin induced ulcer models. For each model, the animals were divided into 3 groups of 6 animals in each. The animals were fasted for 48h and subjected to ulcer induction for evaluating the antiulcer effect of C. chinensis. Prior approval of the IAEC was obtained for conducting antiulcer experiment.

Results: The results were interpreted using one way ANOVA, followed by Dunnett's test. The aqueous leaf extract showed significant antiulcer activity on comparison with standard drug rabeprazole. The aqueous extract significantly reduced the ulcer index and enhanced the percentage protection in a dose dependent manner.

Conclusion: The antiulcer effect of C. chinensis may be due to antioxidant property due the presence of tannins, flavonoids, saponins. C. chinensis is an effective antiulcer agent.
