Price Movements in India between 1823 and 1871

The paper is concerned with the price movements in India from the final consolidation of the British rule and the publication of the index number of wholesale prices from 1871 on wards. The discussion is centred round the debate on price fluctuations during the early eighteen seventies. The debate was set off by the memorandum presented by Sir Bartle Frere before the Select Committee on East India Finance in 1871.
