Nalbuphine is an opioid, which is structurally related to oxymorphone, highly lipid soluble with an agonist activity at kappa and an antagonist activity at µ opioid receptor. Buprenorphine is also a highly lipid soluble thebaine derivative with a partial agonist activity at the μ-opioid receptor. Aim of the study was to compare the onset, duration of sensory blockade, duration of motor blockade, 2 segment regression and duration of post-operative analgesia achieved, by comparing hyperbaric bupivacaine with nalbuphine and hyperbaric bupivacaine with buprenorphine after intrathecal administration.
