Over the years, the relationship between diet and lifestyle diseases has elicited strong opinions and discussions. Historically, high-calorie, high-fat, especially high saturated fat diets have been associated with metabolic diseases, including obesity. Therefore, dietary recommendations in the 1970s and 80s focused mainly on reducing intake of saturated fat-rich animal foods like red meat.
