The growth of plants is influenced by above- and below-ground environmental conditions. Elevated CO2 tends to enhance growth and yield of majority of the agricultural plants and generally increase plant productivity and water-use efficiency. However, the long-term response depends on environmental constraints. It is expected to increase the incidence of extreme weather events, viz. heat waves, heavy rains, drought, floods, etc. making agricultural production more unpredictable and difficult due to climate change.
