Wheat, the second most important cereal crop after rice, plays an important role in food and nutritional security worldwide. Wheat rusts, viz. black or stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici), brown or leaf rust (P. triticina) and yellow or stripe rust (P. striiformis), capable of spreading aerially over long distances, are highly variable and devastating pathogens.
