A reviewer should necessarily declare any conflict of interest. I shall begin by doing so. As a personal friend and longterm colleague of the author, I should not be reviewing this book. Nevertheless, when asked by the Editor, I could not resist doing so, as it would give me an opportunity to reflect on a life in science in India over nearly five decades, a period in which I had a ringside view.
