The cultivated land utilization index (CLUI) for all the districts of Odisha, India during 2013–14 was estimated in this study. The average state CLUI value (0.585) indicated the scope of improving resource utilization, though 67% of the net cropped area is sown twice. All the districts of the state were classified under four scenarios with various combinations of cropping intensity and CLUI. Growing long-duration crop varieties under conditions of ample water availability and, more short-duration less water-requiring crops under limited water supply will improve resource utilization. The results pave the way for analysis of CLUI at a national level for efficient resource utilization by formulating cropping patterns based on water availability.
