A new occurrence of Neoarchean stromatolite, older than 2600 Ma, has been found in the dolomite beds of Aleshpur Formation of the Chitradurga Group in the Shimoga Schist Belt, western Dharwar Craton. The occurrence is near Shanti Sagara lake (Sulekere) in the Davangere district of Karnataka. Stratiform, laminated, columnar with some showing branching forms indicate an advanced stage of evolution of stromatolites. The newly found stromatolite occurrence is an important addition to the inventory of Archaean stromatolites.
