Mobile robots for search and rescue operations in hazardous environments have been actively studied in recent years One promising type of rescue robots is the so-called snake-like robot, which is typically composed of three or more segments that are connected serially. Because of the long and slender shape, snake-like robots are expected to be effective for searches in narrow spaces and over rubbles in quake-devastated regions, etc. In addition, snake-like robots for pipe inspection have been reported in the literature.
