Aim: The aim of the present study is to evaluate the antibacterial and anticancerous activity of Sphaeranthus amaranthoides.
Methods: The elutes of the column chromatography by using ethylacetate and ethanol of Sphaeranthus amaranthoides were tested against multi drug resistant pathogenic bacteria they are E.coli ATCC 25922, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and pseudomonal aeroginosa 27853. by using agar well diffusion method and MIC. The cytotoxic effect of the fraction on Hep2 cells were assayed using 3-(4,5-Dimethylthioazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT).
Results: Among the 3 organisms tested the extract showed a greater activity on pseudomonas then on staphylococcu aureus followed by E.coli. in both, agar well diffusion method and MIC. The 1:8 dilution of the ethylacetate fraction was non toxic to normal cells and also had both anticancerous and antiproliferative activities against cancerous cells.
Conclusion: The study confirm the antibacterial and anticancerous activities of Sphaeranthus amaranthoides extract and is hence therefore a potential drug that requires further studies and development.
