Gamma correction is an essential function in every display device such as CRT, plasma TV, and TFT LCD. In this paper, gamma correction is introduced for improving the image contrast which that produces uniform distribution in gray scale histogram so that the image contrast becomes better. Histogram equalization has been one of the most widely used techniques due to its effectiveness and simplicity in contrast enhancement. The Majority of color histogram equalization methods do not form a uniform histogram in gray scale. After converting a color histogram equalized image into gray scale, the image contrast is worse when compared with the image whose contrast is enhanced in gray scale. Enhancement of contrast and sharpness of an image is required in many applications. It enhances the image contrast and also provides a low mean square error and high peak signal to noise ratio. Test results with natural and synthetic images are presented to compare and analyze various method based upon 3-D color histograms and also enhance contrast.
