Performance Analysis of Transform Based Image Compression Algorithms

Processing the image has ever been one of the thirst areas of humankind. Ranging from diagnosis based on medical image to remote sensing applications, the image processing and analysis plays a crucial role in the development of science and engineering. In this paper different compression schemes are surveyed with regards to grayscale image. The traditional compression techniques are discussed along with some coding schemes and followed by advanced techniques which apply transform based algorithms to reproduce images with maximum fidelity. Discrete Fourier Transforms (DFT), Discrete Cosine Transforms (DCT), Discrete Wavelet Transforms and Affine Transform based Fractal Compression are surveyed for image compression. The performances of algorithms are analyzed using computerized simulation tools in terms of MSE and PSNR which shows qualitative measures of reconstructed image.
