Algorithm Design and Prototyping of Alamouti Encoder and Decoder with MIMO System

In this proposed work, we present the design of a comprehensive algorithm development for MIMO communication systems. This is based upon the highly customizable and optimizable XILINX hardware platform. Multiple Input / Multiple Output (MIMO) technology offers tremendous performance gains for Wireless Long Area Networks (WLANs) at relatively low cost. Some of the techniques like building a hardware test beds are beneficial and fully compatible with today‟s WLAN standards. The proposed work concentrates with algorithm design and implementation of Alamouti‟s Space-Time Block Codes (STBC) with two transmit antennas and two receive antennas over a MIMO channel. The implementation part consists of optimization in various parameters. The proposed work also focuses on the finite precision simulation and synthesis results obtained with ModelSim simulator version XE III 6.0A and Xilinx ISE 7.1i respectively. The tests were carried out on Spartan xc2s600e and 3s5000fg1156 FPGAs. VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language) is used for programming of the proposed model.
