Majority of losses occur in the transmission and distribution network. Transfer of energy from the generating source to the consumers is accompanied by the losses. Placement of the shunt capacitors in the distribution system leads to reduction of power losses. Reduction of the power losses is important to increase the efficiency of the system. As the load in the system is varying the capacitor requires the switching property. This paper presents a method for reducing the losses associated with the reactive component, finding the best possible location for the placement of the capacitors and real time capacitor size at Jajang iron and manganese mines located at Odisha for supplying the reactive current to the system so that the annual cost is reduced and savings is initiated.
