Wireless sensor networks are used in a wide range of applications such as civil and military, inventory management, traffic control, transport and environment monitoring. Growing interest in wireless sensor network is posing new challenge in designing wireless sensor network. For this different optimizations have been proposed and they have in turn created new challenges. Among them are cross-layer techniques which have proven to be the most efficient optimization techniques because they consider the protocol behavior at each layer. The main aim of cross-layer techniques is to retain the functionalities corresponding original layers and to allow interaction, coordination, and joint optimization of protocols at different layers. This paper presents different cross-layer approaches present at different layers and later comparison of these protocols.
