The newer solutions to the modern manufacturing processes are ever growing area. In this regard, the present study aims to investigate the machining of hard chrome plated surfaces. The test specimen used was EN24, upon which chrome plating was done with a thickness of 160μm, various parameters like DOC, feed and speed were varied, following the Design of Experiment technique and use of Minitab software appropriate evaluation of cutting forces and other factors were carried out.
The experimental study aims to investigate hard turning of chrome plated surfaces and to further analyze the output in order to look at hard turning as replacement for grinding which is complex and expensive. In this present study, PcBN tool insert were used and investigation of various cutting forces and their effects on the workpiece carried out. The chips produced during machining were studied using SEM to conclude the mechanism of metal cutting.
