Physicians should Enable Smokers-Quit Smoking or Smokers may Quit Life

Most people know the ill effects of smoking cigarettes. Cigarette smoking has become a complex social and medical issue. The nicotine in cigarettes makes it a very addictive habit. Counselling by physicians is very important as the physician can play an important role in curbing smoking. The physician is the protector of public health and possesses specific expertise too and therefore must take an active role in such matters.

This article presents the effects of smoking in medical terms, the various aspects of smoking cessation and the steps that physicians and other health professionals should take in persuading smokers to give up this health damaging habit. There are pharmacological treatments too which are described.
