Dr Yajuvendra V Gawai (YVG): Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive technique of surgery using a small endoscope mounted on a camera which is inserted in the joint using a keyhole incision. Other keyhole incisions are created as needed to work within the joint using special instruments. Though it started as a diagnostic procedure in the era before Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI), nowadays a lot of reconstructive ligament and even bone surgeries are done with the help of arthroscopy. Joint surgery was revolutionised by the advent of arthroscopy as it gave access to recesses of joints which was difficult with standard techniques. Pathophysiology of many joint ailments was understood better and hence their treatment too evolved due to arthroscopy.
