Bacteriological Profile and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Pattern among Patients with Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media in a Hospital Based Study in India

The objective of the study was to identify the microflora and their antimicrobial sensitivity pattern in chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). The study was conducted on patients in Rohilkhand region. Eighty patients with chronic discharge who had not received antibiotics for the previous five days were selected, swabs were collected and processed, and organisms identified using standard culture method. Antimicrobial susceptibility pattern against 8 commonly used drugs was performed by agar disc diffusion method. Pseudomonas aeruginosa 21(32.81%) was the commonest isolate followed by Staphylococcus aureus 17(26.56%) and Klebsiella spp. 12(18.75%).

Majority of the isolates were sensitive to ciprofloxacin and Augmentin (Amoxycillin+Clavulanic acid), and Amikacin.
