A Study of Prevalence and Progress towards Elimination of Iodine Deficiency Disorders in Ahmedabad District of Gujarat

Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) is the major public health problem in India. The present study is to evaluate the IDD status in Ahmedabad district of Gujarat. A community based cross sectional study among 2940 children aged 6 to 12 years was conducted during 2009 to determine the status of Iodine Deficiency Disorders, using recommended methods and indicators. Total Goitre Rate was 10.0% with no significant gender difference (p > 0.05). Median Urinary Iodine level was 192.5 μg/l. The proportion of individual with urinary iodine level less than 100 and 50 were 18.1% and 2.9% respectively. 55.67% of households were found to be consuming adequately iodised salt more than 15 ppm).
