Subscribe/Renew Journal
The present study was designed to study the haematological profile (Nucleated Red Blood cell count, Immature to Total neutrophil ratio and Platelet count) in the cord blood as a marker of perinatal asphyxia. It was a retrospective hospital based study. Seventy term babies with perinatal asphyxia were the subjects of the study. Twentyfive normal term babies were taken as control A blood smear from cord blood was evaluated for Nucleated red biood cell(NRBC)/100 leucocytes(WBC), Immature to total neutrophil (l/T) ratio and Platelet count. The elevation in NRBC/100 WBC was highly significant in foetal asphyxia, birth asphyxia&foetal+birth asphyxia group, while l/T ratio was significantly elevated in foetal asphyxia group only. Platelet count was significantly decreased in foetal asphyxia group and foetal+birth asphyxia group. NRBC count was elevated in perinatal asphyxia. l/T ratio was elevated in foetal asphyxia only. Platelet count was decreased in babies with foetal asphyxia&foetal+birth asphyxia group.
