Gallstone disease has troubled human lives since time immemorial. The incidence of this disease is psrticularly more common in this part of world. Various established risk factors for gallstone formation are elderly age, female sex and obesity etc. We carried out a prospective study on 100 patients of gallstone disease to study the role of serum iron in the pathogenesis of gallstones. The results of the study revealed that low serum iron levels i.e. subclinical anaemia is associated with increased concentration of biliary cholesterol. Hence it can act as a risk factor for gallstone disease.
