Swami Vivekananda was well aware of the position of women in India. In the Vedic period quite a few women of the upper caste even composed Vedic hymns the names of Maitreyi, Gargi, Apala, Ghosh, Viswabara, Khana are well-known. In the early Vedic period women enjoyed considerable freedom and were pivotal to the family and the social structure. Its nature was by and large matriarchal.
