Cutting tools had a vital role in the development of human civilization that dates back few thousand years. Pieces of stone, bone, etc. have played important role to serve variety of purposes as needed by primitive men in the Paleolithic and Neolithic Age. Later, tools made of bronze and different steels were employed. Ceramic cutting tools, coated tools, etc. are recent developments to have high production rate maintaining quality. In this article, a brief history of development of cutting tool is outlined. Also some works towards development of toughened alumina cutting tool inserts involved with this author are mentioned.
