Allow me to quote Mr. Advani, Editor of Business India, "How many Indian Companies are technology driven".
Some of my readers may wonder why we need to ask this question! After all, we have the third largest pool of scientific personnel.

Let us take a close look at the post budget challenges that are likely to be faced by Indian Industries.
Although several Pandits have raised doubts about the liberalisation package since the Industrial production figures show a relatively low rate of growth and many industries have been destabilished contributing to this lower growth, the fact is that the whole liberalisation process has unshackled industrial creativity.

Air-plasma cutting is becoming popular and a practical alternative to oxy-cutting for cutting of mild steel in many fabrication industries. The main advantage lies in the fact that air-plasma cutting is much faster than oxy-cutting. It is therefore expected that it will reduce the cutting cost by accomplishing the cutting much faster. This is unfortunately, not necessarily true. This paper analyses the truth behind this and attempts to identify the conditions which will ensure maximum benefit from air-plasma cutting.- Development of Inverter Welding Power Sources

Inverter circuitry has been used for quite sometime in drive systems, battery chargers, aircraft industries, controls and recreation vehicles. With the advent of Solid State Electronics, the high power, reliable, cost effective switching devices were made available which also make the technology adoptable for welding power sources.- “Efficient Tandem MIG Welding of Bogie Longitudinal Girders for Rail Vehicles”-Case Study

Welding - ELH Eissenbahn Lautwerke GmbH & Co. KG Halle, a well known medium-sized company, supplies bogies to wagon manufacturers for both the domestic and export markets. The longitudinal girders, which are more than 3 metres long and are made of 16mm thick steel plates, are welded on a robot system supplied by Carl Cloos Schweisstechnik GmbH, Haiger Germany. The Tandem high capacity welding process, where two welding wires are melted simultaneously, enables both improved seam quality and considerably higher weld speeds to be achieved.- From the Editor's Desk

Dear Reader,
At the very outset please accept my apologies for not being able to publish in time the Indian Welding Journal January '95 issue which was mainly due to some unforseen reasons beyond our control. The Central Council had kindly agreed to combine January & April ’95 issue of IWJ.
