Cryogenics-a science dealing with the behaviour of materials at low temperatures has become a practical tool for industry, particularly in the field of low temperature process plant, atomic energy, rocketry and missiles, air-craft and space-craft. The physical properties of materials at a very low temperature differ so widely from those normally encountered that an engineer or a scientist cannot probably rely upon ordinary experience and so, an entirely new thriving industry with a new dimension has developed.
