Effectiveness of Visual Package on Knowledge Regarding Vitamin ‘A’ Deficiency and its Prevention among Mothers of under Five Children in a Selected Community at Mangalore.

vitamin A deficiency is one of the nutritional problems in India. Children below 5 years are more vulnerable to this deficiency. Mothers are the primary care giver and have to be equipped with knowledge of vitamin A deficiency. Aim: Effectiveness of visual package on knowledge regarding vitamin ‘A’ deficiency and its prevention among mothers of under five children. Methods: pre-experimental one group pretest posttest design was used for the study. The study was conducted in Moodshedde area in Mangalore. The sample consisted of 30 mothers of under five children were selected by using purposive sampling techniques. The instruments used were demographic proforma and structured knowledge questionnaire. Results: the data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The result revealed that in pretest 73.3% of mothers had average knowledge while 3.3% had inadequate knowledge; where as in the post-test 70% of the mothers had adequate knowledge. The present study showed that there is a significant difference between pre-test and post-test knowledge score t₍₂₉₎ – 5.14 at p<0.05 and also found that there is no significant association of knowledge score with demographical variable as age of the mother, religion, educational status, source of information , number of children ( X²=0.45, 1.28,2.48,2.064,1.47 at p <0.05).
