Traffic congestion has become a major concern in many cities throughout the world. Traffic Light Controllers (TLC) are used to ease traffic congestion by instructing the vehicle drivers to stop or to proceed. These traffic signal controllers generally contain signal lights that are controlled by timers. In this type of traffic control, emergency vehicles such as ambulance, VIP cars, fire service etc. are made to wait till the signal time count, which is not desirable. In this paper, we have proposed a new method called Automatic Controller for Emergency Vehicle (ACEV) for smooth traffic flow. The ACEV has intelligence to sense critical situations such as the arrival cross the junction and after that maintain the sequence of the TLC accordingly and lets the emergency vehicle cross the junction without much delay. The ACEV has been successfully implemented and tested using micro controller. The performance and noise analysis of the system have been studied. The implemented system has many advantages like low cost, faster response for emergency case. It can be adapted to developing cities at all levels.
