A Comparative Study to Assess the Knowledge Regarding Diabetes Mellitus Among Adults in Selected Rural and Urban Community, Hoshiarpur, Punjab

Background of the study: Diabetes mellitus is a silent killer disease associated with a variety of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and complications. Diabetes is a disease, which an individual can manage by himself at home by bringing some modifications in their daily life activities. People with diabetes can be benefited by providing education about the disease. And it is the correct time to act, kill the disease, before it kills you! Aim of the study: To compare the knowledge regarding diabetes mellitus among adults in selected rural and urban community, Hoshiarpur, Punjab. Material and methods: A quantitative comparative research approach was used. Total 100 samples were taken (50 each from rural and urban community) based on convenient sampling technique and were asked to complete the questionnaire assessing knowledge regarding diabetes mellitus. Findings: As per as level of knowledge was concerned, in rural community, 14% adults have good knowledge, 60% adults have average knowledge and rest 26% adults have poor knowledge. In urban community, 24% adults have good knowledge, 44% adults have average knowledge and 32% adults have poor knowledge regarding diabetes mellitus. Conclusion: The data suggest that knowledge regarding diabetes mellitus was almost similar among adults in rural and urban community. Hence Ho hypothesis of the study was accepted i.e. there will be no significant difference of knowledge regarding diabetes mellitus among the adults in rural and urban community at p<0.05 level of significance.
