Objective: To check the impact of normal saline infusion to maintain patency of the peripheral venous catheter used for administration of routine medication.

Materials and Methods: Randomly selected 1000 patients (control group n=500 and Experimental group n=500) from different setting of Muktsar city on the basis of power analysis. An evaluative research approach is used to evaluate the impact of normal saline flushing in maintaining the patency of PIVC. Research design - Randomized Controlled Trail.

Result: The overall finding of the study indicated that 2ml intermittent normal saline flushing every two hourly will maintain the patency of PIVC and in the present study the calculate p value was 0.00 which is highly significant at p<0.01 level.

Conclusion: The overall finding of the study were concluded that intermittent saline flushing is an important and best methods to use in clinical setting for maintaining the patency of PIVC to reduce the need for the frequent removal and insertion of the I.V cannula, prevent local tissue damage, blood infiltration from cannula, pain, swelling, erythema surrounding the cannula and minimize the complication associated with the clot formation and infiltration of blood from cannula site and improve the quality of nursing care and minimizing the hazard for the patients.
