Modern Street Lighting Practices

Living in an age of abundance of light, it is hard for us to credit the insecurity of streets in those early days when illuminant was wood. The streets were then sparingly used at night, and when used it was temporarily lighted by carrying torches of resinous wood, pine splinters and the like.
