When India became independent in 1947, West Bengal (read undivided Bengal) was number one industrialised state in India followed by Maharastra and Madras. Undivided Bengal in British India was the unquestioned leader so far as industrial development was concerned. In fact West Bengal maintained this leadership almost upto the year 1960.
