This paper attempts to present causes of distortion in welded joints and its remedies so as to avoid rejection of welded products. It is well established today that fabrication by welding can achieve a lighter and cheaper form of construction than other methods of joining, but the welds in relation to the parts joined, in many cases, have considerable influence on the strength of the joint. A good welding means a sound joint free from harmful flaw and possessing the requisite ductility and strength.

In addition to the stresses due to the loads applied to the welded joints in operation stresses are also produced by expansion and contraction. These are liable to cause considerable distortion of the work. To avoid distortion a thorough knowledge on theory of distortion and its causes and remedies is required, which the author has tried to explain in this paper.
