Development of the City of Calcutta (Drainage)
Subscribe/Renew Journal
In my previous paper on the subject, published in Vol. XXXVII of the Journal of the Association of Engineers, a historical sketch was given about the origin and growth of the City of Calcutta. There it was shown, how within a short span of 270 years, the city developed from a cluster of tiny villages into one of the leading cities of the East. It was also pointed out that inspite of all round development of the city in the sphere of economics, industry, population, education, roads, buildings etc., the city suffered from acute drainage congestion which was fundamentally due to unwise selection of site of the city. The object of the present paper is to discuss in detail, the drainage problem of the city and possible ways and means for solution.
