Fundamental Properties of Ultrasonic Waves

Ultrasonic waves may be defined as sound waves of a pitch higher than that audible to the human ear i.e. having a frequency above 20,000 c.p.s. The frequencies used for the examination of welds are high up in the ultrasonic range, lying for most work between .5 and 8 megacycles per second.
